BEL and France’s Safran have partnered to jointly manufacture the HAMMER precision munition in India, aiming to boost defence indigenisation and enhance high-accuracy strike capabilities for frontline aircraft.
HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range), developed by Safran, will now be assembled, integrated, and tested in India through the BEL–Safran partnership, strengthening domestic manufacturing of precision-guided weapons.
The collaboration aligns with India’s defence-indigenisation goals.
It will equip Rafale and LCA Tejas aircraft for fast, accurate strikes in high-threat environments.
The weapon enhances India’s capability to hit fortified or time-sensitive targets with precision.
HAMMER is a precision-guided, stand-off air-to-ground weapon designed for striking protected or strategically vital targets. It is optimised for modern aircraft and effective in contested, mountainous, or high-altitude zones.
Standard bombs are enhanced with guidance and optional range-extension kits, enabling mission flexibility and efficient logistics through common base munitions.
Multiple guidance options—GPS/INS, infrared, and laser—ensure high accuracy while minimising collateral damage. The system can neutralise bunkers, airfields, shelters, and other hardened assets.
Stand-Off Capability and Agility
With a range of around 70 km, HAMMER allows aircraft to engage from beyond enemy air-defence reach. Its agility supports operations in difficult terrain, especially along India’s northern borders.
Already integrated with Rafale, HAMMER is being prepared for LCA Tejas. Cross-platform use strengthens uniform precision-strike capability across Indian Air Force and Navy assets.
The BEL–Safran project targets nearly 60% localisation. BEL will manage final assembly, testing, and quality control, contributing to domestic expertise in guidance and weapon technology.
Localised production reduces import dependence and ensures reliable long-term supply chains. It also enables future India-specific upgrades and improves operational sustainability.
Domestic production supports India’s goal of a self-reliant defence ecosystem and may create export prospects for precision-guided munitions.
HAMMER offers accurate, stand-off strike options against hardened, high-value targets, improving deterrence and operational readiness in sensitive regions.
Indigenous manufacturing reduces delays from emergency imports and is cost-effective over time compared to relying on foreign procurement.
The BEL–Safran HAMMER venture boosts India’s precision-strike capability and defence self-reliance. It strengthens supply chains, supports indigenisation, and enhances preparedness for future operational needs.
